Participation of the PABSEC Delegation in the Monitoring of the Elections to the European Parliament in Bulgaria, 25-27 May 2019
On 25-27 May 2019, the PABSEC Delegation composed of Mr. Igor Becic, Head of the PABSEC Serbian Delegation, Mr. Ramaz Nikolashvili, Vice-Chairman of the PABSEC Legal and Political Affairs Committee and member of the PABSEC Georgian Delegation, and Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, participated in the monitoring of the elections to the European Parliament in Bulgaria.
The European Parliament elections are held in different countries on different days during the period from 23 to 26 May. The elections to the European Parliament in Bulgaria were held on Sunday, 26 May 2019.
For the next term - from 2019 to 2024 – the 751 Members of the European Parliament will be elected. The allocation of seats to each member state is based on the principle of proportionality of the population. Bulgaria has 17 mandates in the EP.
On the Election Day, the PABSEC Delegation visited several polling stations in the city of Sofia and noted that the elections were held in full compliance with the standards of democratic elections. In some polling stations, voting machines were installed and upon the wish, the citizens could vote automatically.
The turnout, according to preliminary data, was 30.83%. According to the preliminary results of the elections, the Party GERB ("Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria") received 6 mandates, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) - 5 mandates, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) - 3 mandates, the Bulgarian National Movement (VMRO) - 2 mandates and coalition “Democratic Bulgaria” - 1 mandate.
