Mr. Mehmet Ali ŞAHIN

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey

H.E. Mr. Mehmet Ali Şahin was born in Karabük on 16 September 1950.

He graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Law in 1979.

After the graduation, he started to work as a lawyer.

He served as the Mayor of Fatih Province of Istanbul.

H.E. Mr. Şahin is the founding member of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party).

He was elected as the Deputy of Istanbul in the General Elections held in 1995 (20th Legislative Term), in 1999 (21st Legislative Term), and in 2002 (22nd Legislative Term).

He worked as the Deputy Chairman of AK Party Group in the Turkish Parliament.

In the General Elections held on 22 July 2007 (23rd Legislative Term), H.E. Mr. Şahin was re-elected as the Deputy of Antalya.

He served as the Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister in the 58th and 59th Governments.

He was appointed as the Minister of Justice in the 60th Government.

In the election held on 5 August 2009, Mr. Şahin was elected as the 24th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

Mr. Mehmet Ali Şahin is married and has four children.
