Participation of Dr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, the PABSEC Deputy Secretary General, in the 1st Round Table discussion on “Aspects of parliamentary cooperation in Southeast Europe and Mediterranean”, Athens, 14 March 2017
On Tuesday 14 March 2017, Dr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, the PABSEC Deputy Secretary General, participated in the 1st Round Table Discussion on “Aspects of parliamentary cooperation in Southeast Europe and Mediterranean”, organized by the Athens University and the Hellenic Institute of International Affairs.
In the meeting participated several institutions and universities from the Mediterranean and South-Eastern Europe, political science institutions, NGO’s and representatives from several embassies accredited in Athens.
In his address, Dr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis underlined that PABSEC, as the parliamentary branch of the organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, has always placed emphasis to the issue of parliamentary diplomacy and parliamentary cooperation.
The PABSEC has established strong and fruitful cooperation with many other parliamentary assemblies and organizations which share the similar vision, starting from the belief that Parliaments and parliamentarians have the privilege to tackle the issues related to the relations among states. The challenges which have been presented cannot be solved and implemented, only at the national level, and by individual policies alone. The main responsibility of the parliamentarians is to bridge the gap between different policies, strategies and cultures, finding the most suitable way to serve the common goals and to establish peace, stability and prosperity.
He pointed out that parliaments have a special role in forging the laws, guidelines, frameworks and incentives that will allow efficient implementation of national and international engagements and to face a series of challenges of everyday life.
Mr. Makrygiannis also informed the participants about the PABSEC activities, stressing upon the Reports and Recommendations adopted by several PABSEC General Assemblies, concerning the interparliamentary relations and the cooperation between parliamentary assemblies and parliamentarians, from the BSEC member states. These documents outline the basic strategy of the Parliamentary Assembly on this issue.
